shock and awe

I got up on a sunday morning EARLY... cause all these thoughts in my mind I could not keep to my self...

I live in a poor poor third world country.... where who ever has the access to anything has to pay three times it's actual value for it (if you have any doubts, we pay 5 dollars for a galon of gas, do the math)... but back to the subject... Yesterday I felt like I was part of an MTV show... I went to an activity typical of the Dominican Republic... at a school NOT VERY TYPICAL of the Dominican Republic... where the kids of the graduating class of 2008 where presenting themselves to the rest of the school and everyone who was there... it usually is a very fraternal activity... a showcase of togetherness and classmanship (at least that's what Im used to seeing)... but " I " me and my self, thought it got a little out of hand, when the kids arrived in a helicopter, and all sorts of LUXURY vehicles...

I can't begin to think how can their parents ever teach them to be humble... how will they ever drop down to notice the city, country, world they live in (the road that leads to the school is not even paved for god's sake!!!!) ... when they think they can mock the behavior they see on TV (which frankly disgusts me) ...

Just so everyone who reads this knows... no I don't feel jealous because I did not get to rent a chopper at 16... I just don't think that is rightful thinking or judgment by the parents or teachers who didn't analyze and just acknowledge this was a little bit over the top... and yet I say it once more.. the freakin road that leads to the school is not even paved for god's sake!!!!... but why would they teach them to do good (they could have invested the money in paving the damn road) but why would the do that... their class would never be remembered if the did an honorable thing, but by arriving in a chopper, hey there's some recognition...

*who I'm I kidding OUR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT is supposed to take care of that kind of little details...

But what made me wonder even more... was the fact that a member of last years graduating class died a day before when he crashed his hundred thousand dollar porsche (I told you to do the math) into a tree when speeding back to the city... and if that's not enough... there were little kids outside of the school that rushed you on your way to your car begging for money....

... I really don't know if to be mad or sad... nowadays you are what you have not what you've accomplished...

In the end the activity was what it intended to be... kids of all grades enjoyed a field day (which didn't provide much more activities than soda and pizza) and danced the night away... third graders and all... with the close watch of their responsible parents...

I just hope that next years graduating class doesn't try to land a plane in the school's parking lot... in the other hand, the unpaved road can serve as a good landing strip

¡Sorpresa!

En un libro sobre Coaching, de Viviane Launer, encontré este cuento. Un hombre encontró un capullo de mariposa y se lo llevó a casa para poder ver a la mariposa cuando saliera. Un día vio que había un pequeño orificio y observó por horas cómo la mariposa luchaba por salir del capullo. Vió su duro forcejeo para atravesar el orificio del capullo hasta que la mariposa dejó de forcejear como si se hubiera atascado. El buen hombre decidió ayudarla y cortó con una tijera el orificio para hacer el capullo más grande y, así, la mariposa pudo salir.

Pero, al salir, la mariposa tenía el cuerpo hinchado y las alas pequeñas y dobladas. El hombre esperó que, en cualquier instante, las alas se estirarían y crecerían para soportar el cuerpo que se contraería al reducirse el hinchazón. Nada de eso sucedió y la mariposa sólo podía arrastrarse en círculos con su cuerpecito hinchado y sus alas dobladas. Jamás pudo volar. El hombre no entendió que restringir la apertura del capullo y la lucha de la mariposa para salir del orificio era la forma en que la naturaleza forzaba los fluidos del cuerpo de la mariposa hacia las alas para que se hicieran grandes y fuertes para volar.

La libertad y el volar sólo podían ser fruto de la lucha. Muchas veces, las luchas son lo que necesitamos en la vida. Si se nos permitiera progresar sin obstáculos, nos convertiríamos en inválidos. No podríamos crecer y ser fuertes por nosotros mismos. Cada día, debemos recordar que nunca recibimos más de lo que podemos soportar y que nuestros esfuerzos y nuestras caídas nos fortalecen, así como el oro es refinado con el fuego.

• Globally, tropical deforestation contributes at least 20 percent of global greenhouse gases – more than the entire transportation sector. Some 35.1 million acres of tropical forests are destroyed each year, releasing millions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere.
• Climate change is among the greatest threats to biodiversity today. As Earth's temperature rises, wildlife moves to more suitable habitat northward or perhaps to higher elevations. Some coral reef species cannot move, other species are not suited to new ecosystems, and some are simply running out of room to live. Meanwhile, glaciers are melting, ocean chemistry is changing, and entire populations of species are disappearing. If left unchecked, climate change could prompt the extinction of tens of thousands of species in as few as 50 years.
• Climate Changes are also Linked to Higher Rates of Diseases....Warmer temperatures allow mosquitoes to thrive and parasites to mature inside them before being transmitted to humans. As average temperatures increase, so have the instances of potentially fatal mosquito-borne illnesses.
  
• Glaciers aren’t the only structures that could disappear as a result of climate change. Social, economic, and political structures could melt away as natural resources dwindle. As scientists rigorously examine the long-term implications of climate change, they are finding that it threatens to make the world and its citizens far less secure.
• The world's seafood will be entirely depleted by 2048, according to an early November report in the journal Science. That means the moment to shape up is now. By buying and eating certain types of seafood, you can discourage harmful fishing practices and avoid the more depleted or threatened species. Billions in Oil Missing in Iraq since the "War" Started

Between 100,000 and 300,000 barrels a day of Iraq’s declared oil production over the past four years is unaccounted for and could have been siphoned off through corruption or smuggling, according to a draft American government report.

Using an average of $50 a barrel, the report said the discrepancy was valued at $5 million to $15 million daily.

The report does not give a final conclusion on what happened to the missing fraction of the roughly two million barrels pumped by Iraq each day, but the findings are sure to reinforce longstanding suspicions that smugglers, insurgents and corrupt officials control significant parts of the country’s oil industry.

The report also covered alternative explanations for the billions of dollars worth of discrepancies, including the possibility that Iraq has been consistently overstating its oil production.

Un dominicano le envía un mail con una pregunta a otro dominicano que radica en los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica: '¿Somos ricos los dominicanos?'

La respuesta del dominicano que vive en los Estados Unidos fue la siguiente:
'Juan, como se ve que los árboles no te dejan ver el bosque! ¿Cómo puedes llamarte pobre, cuando eres capaz de pagar por un metro cúbico de agua más del doble de lo que pago yo?
¿Cuando te das el lujo de pagar tarifas de electricidad y/o de teléfono un 60% más caras de lo que me cuestan a mi? ¿O, cuando por un carro que a mi me cuesta U.S. $10,000 tu puedes pagar U.S.$28,000 porque tu si puedes darte el gusto de regalarle U.S. $18,000 Dólares al gobierno y nosotros no;

¡Caramba Juan, no te entiendo! 'Pobres somos nosotros los habitantes de la Florida, ya que el Gobierno Estatal, teniendo en cuenta nuestraprecaria situación financiera, nos cobra solo el 2% (hay otro 4% que es Federal; total 6%) de impuestos por ITBIS. Y no un 16%, como a ustedes los ricos que viven en Rep. Dominicana. 'Además, son ustedes los que tienen 'Impuestos de Lujo' (por alcohol, cigarrillos, puros, cerveza, vinos, etc.) que alcanza hasta el 120% de impuesto, o los otros. Porque si ustedes no fueran ricos, qué sentido tendría tener unos impuestos de ese calibre? '

¿Pobre??? ¿De donde? 'Un país que es capaz de cobrar el Impuesto sobre la renta POR ADELANTADO, como la República Dominicana, NECESARIAMENTE tiene que nadar en la abundancia porque asume que los negocios de la república y TODOS sus habitantes SIEMPRE tendrán ganancias y, por supuesto son, como su nombre lo indica: RICOS. 'Los pobres somos nosotros que NO pagamos Impuesto sobre la Renta si ganamos menos de U.S. $3,000 al mes POR PERSONA.

Y allí pagan policía privada, mientras que nosotros nos conformamos con la pública. Y envían a los hijos a colegios privados y mira si seremos pobres aquí en USA, que las escuelas publicas te prestan los libros de estudio previendo que no tengas con que comprarlos. 'A veces me pongo verde de envidia pensando que cuando en Rep. Dominicana sacan un préstamo cualquiera, son capaces de pagar 23% anual de intereses, como mínimo. -ESO ES SER RICO! No como aquí, que apenas llegamos al 8% (generalmente 7.8%), justamente porque NO estamos en condiciones de pagar mas. 'Supongo que como todo rico, tienes un carro y que estas pagando un 6 o 7% anual de seguro; si te sirve de información, yo pago solo U.S. $345 por año. Saca la cuenta.

¿Quién es el rico, y quién el pobre? 'Por ultimo, casi el 40% de la población económicamente activa en Rep. Dominicana, NO TIENE EMPLEO. Aquí, en cambio, solo hay un 4% en la misma Situación. No te parece que el vivir sin trabajar es un lujo que solo los ricos se pueden dar? Y en este caso, no habría en Rep. Dominicana Veinte veces mas ricos que aquí?'Vamos, hermano; te quedaste, porque eres RICO. Son los pobres como yo los que nos fuimos...

Bueno Juan te mando un abrazo y ahí luego me platicas que otros Impuestos tienen el honor de pagar.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -

Troublesome, because it's a community that draws its very life from the stuff.

The city and its famous strip, South Beach, thrive off the sunbathers who come from across the globe to spread their towels and lie upon the coarse granules laden with seashell – generating $4.2 billion annually from tourism. The sand also protects the community from the pounding waves of hurricanes.

For 30 years the city has replenished its beaches with sand from offshore sources, pumping it directly from the ocean floor. But these sources are thinning, and the process is complicated by three sensitive coral reefs that run parallel to the coastline. Consequently, local leaders must look elsewhere for sand. Just taking the sand from elsewhere, they've learned, is not a neighborly thing to do. They sparked controversy last year when they sought sand offshore from St. Lucie County, some 120 miles up the East Coast. Residents there accused Miami Beach of plotting to rob them of sand.

So now they are eyeing sandy shores across the sea.Miami Beach leaders are turning toward foreign sources such as the Bahamas. They've received offers from the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Mexico. In the Dominican Republic, for example, a fish farm offered to sell Miami Beach sand from newly dug fish ponds.

But there's a problem: Federal law prevents Miami Beach from considering foreign sources until a domestic search is exhausted. So local leaders and the US Army Corps of Engineers have drafted a report summarizing their far-reaching effort. They hope for approval later this year to begin importing foreign sand, said Brian Flynn, an administrator in the Miami-Dade Department of Environmental Resources Management.

"If we have one more hurricane we're going to need an external source," he said. "We're the first county that's essentially run out of sand. Broward County to our north is right behind us. They've probably got one more project, and they're going to be out."

Other coastal communities are bracing for the same, as hurricanes, rising ocean levels, and other forces combine to erode beaches even as they assume cornerstone roles in local and state economies. Communities in southern California and Hawaii also are facing similar shortages, said Charley Chesnutt, a coastal engineer for the Institute for Water Resources, a research organization of the US Army Corps of Engineers.

It's not that sand is a diminishing resource, but that its distribution is uneven, an unfortunate habit of nature for communities like Miami Beach. The costly challenge is getting sand to match a beach, granules that are the same size and color.

un forward pa que despierten

¿Cuanto tiempo tomara hasta que todos empecemos a ver la realidad de la situación? Cada día tenemos menos y menos libertades - en el nombre del progreso. Cada día vemos el gobierno robando más y más – en el nombre del progreso. Cada día estamos más y más lejos del camino de prosperidad – en el nombre del progreso. ¿Como puede ser que nos hemos decidido hacernos 'el chivo loco'?

Por arriba y por abajo, por cada lado posible, la situación es pone peor y peor. ¿Que se puede hacer para efectuar un cambio? A veces se tiene que hacer lo improbable y lo imposible. Como inevitablemente tiene que pasar, el tiempo finalmente vendrá cuando una generación aparecerá y la cual no toleran mas las indiscreciones y ineptitudes de un sistema de gobierno la cual obviamente no podrá tener chancee de funcionar correctamente cuando uno considera el estado actual del país.

Esa generación tendrá una gran batalla para luchar si tendrán cualquier chancee de realizar cualquier cambios positivos, reales y permanentes en el crecimiento y desarrollo del país, el cual tiene un potencial inmenso.

Es seguro que eventualmente habrá una guerra civil, la cual no será luchada con armas de fuego, sino dentro de los mismos canales que hoy día se usan para la degradación de nuestro pobre país. La pregunta que no se puede evitar, es cuando llegara el día en la cual esta generación este suficientemente disgustados con la degradación continua del país que se levantaran as sus pies y se nieguen aguantarlo mas?

Cuando llegue ese día no será solo difícil, pero se vera como una misión imposible... lo cual realmente será. Pero con un optimismo, paciencia y esfuerzo monumental, lo imposible se convertirá a lo posible, tangible y real. Solo tenemos que hacernos la pregunta real... ¿Cuando pasara esta revolución?

Bueno mis amigos y amigas – eso realmente es una excelente pregunta. La revolución del metro puede ser que empiece hoy, así como podrán ser cien años más. ¿Cuando llegara una generación suficientemente enamorados con su país que no permitirán que el país se siga deteriorando?

Para el futuro del país, espero que no sea ‘mañana’.
